My heart does a little leap of joy when I see this photo:
While I think the Sex and the City TV series ended perfectly, I'm still eagerly anticipating the movie - which narratively picks up four years after the series ends. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I'm one of those women that's seen every episode of the show at least a few times...and who joyously clicked her heels (okay maybe they were flip-flops) when I received the entire series on DVD for my 30th birthday.
Theories abound as to why the show was so successful, here's a few:
1) We can relate - We've all had a Mr.Big (a love we just can't seem to shake), or an Aidan (someone who was perfect in theory, but somehow wasn't a right fit). If not, perhaps you can relate to Samantha's inability to commit, or on the opposite side of the coin - Charlotte's burning desire for a long-term success story. Or perhaps it's Miranda's complete bewilderment at the odd and uncomfortable dating situations she found herself in. With four strong women with distinct personalities, careers, and predilections for fashion, you could usually find yourself in at least one of them.
2) We miss our girlfriends - Recently Electric Firefly shared an analysis in a comment about how it resonated with women because as adults we missed the girlish relationships these women have with one another. Many of us don't have the time to pick up the phone and discuss small details with our girlfriends like what we're going to wear that day or how many pieces of cake we ate. We wish we could, but due to time constraints we don't. This analysis is right-on.
3) Bare breasts on TV - Finally, the reason why a lot of men tuned in: Sex and Nudity. Back in 1998, they were really pushing the envelope delving into the world of threesomes, fetishes, and dildos (to name a few). Not to mention they were actually showing a lot of what went on in the bedrooms of these women. It was risque back then, even for HBO.
So, when the movie comes out May 30, I'm going...and I'm taking some girlfriends with me.

and you are dead on about why women (and men!) loved the show. :D
i still watch the show as it appears on two channels nighly here.
i love it. loved the finale and am SUPER excited to see the movie.
I always wanted to watch this show, but never had HBO (still don't), so when it finally began showing in synication, I was thrilled. My cable station actually runs it nightly on two different networks. I get to catch up on all the old episodes for an hour each evening before bed. It's become my guilty pleasure. Now if someone would just buy me the whole set on DVD, then I could watch it in chronilogical order and stop being confused at what part of their timeline I am in when watching. Ha. I need to do this before the movie comes out. And I still haven't seen the finale... so don't give it away!
I can't wait until this movie comes out! I loved SITC and never missed one episode. I want Carrie to still be a fashion icon but a total mess in relationships, Samantha to still be slutty, Charlotte to be judgemental and dress like she is playing tennis and Miranda to be neurotic as ever!
AAHHHHHHH...the excitement.
