Things I like Thursday: Sushi
su·shi n. Cold cooked rice dressed with vinegar that is shaped into bite-sized pieces and topped with raw or cooked fish, or formed into a roll with fish, egg, or vegetables and wrapped in seaweed.
Favorites: unagi (yes, eel), soft-shell crab (aka Spider), and spicy tuna
Why sushi?
1) Sushi just seems to complement any great rendezvous.
I had a dream date in San Francisco that involved sushi. My husband and I were still dating, and also living 2500 miles apart, so we decided to meet in SF. I can’t even remember the name of the sushi bar - probably because I drank too much sake, and was extremely nervous walking in heels, tipsy, down the steeply inclined street afterward. But, I do remember we had a great time sitting at the bar, daring each other to try less mainstream rolls. (Sushi was followed by a Norah Jones concert in Berkeley where I sat on an almost vertical incline in a miniskirt, clutching my husband – not out of adoration – but out of fear that I would slide down, taking out several dozen people in front of me. Obviously the sushi and sake portion of the evening was more relaxing).
2) Wasabi. This spicy, horseradish-based condiment can be used in other dishes, but really it’s best on sushi. I don’t even bother diluting it in soy sauce. I just apply it directly to the roll and eat.
3) It’s healthy. Typically low-cal, low-fat foods are tasteless. Sushi is the exception. It’s also packed with protein and nutrients.
The only time I haven't had a pleasant sushi experience is when I've been desperate and picked up a six-pack at the supermarket. This is NEVER a good idea. It's not fresh and will not taste as good as the real deal, and therefore, will not satiate your craving for it. So, when you see it there, just resist the urge, and move along. Kanpai!

yum yum.....you are making me hungry! I LOVE sushi ! :)
I used to love unagi until I had a couple of bad ones from some normally good restaurants. The unagi is usually predone by another company....and there were some bad batches floating around. After 3 nasty experiences, I just can't touch the stuff anymore. :(
But....there is still lots and lots of other yummy stuff! :) mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!
Sushi is definitely a favorite of mine too! (I can see what our vox meet-up is going to include -- unagi -- also my favorite). I think its such a great meal -- lean, not-too-filling, often with great presentation.
I'm the only person in my crowd though that digs Ikura -- the salmon roe.
That's the only bad ones I have had and its because Unagi is usually something they buy specially prepared and then heat it up on that special little BBQ like unit. With the special sauce sometimes its hard to spot if its gone off. It was totally a freak thing and, as far as I know, it hasn't happened since. My hubby and sis always says it tastes good....but after 3 instances of it happening to me, I just get nauseous-association to it. Such a shame because it was sooooooo yummy. (when it was good)
And I just want to say I am in agreement with Key.....sashimi is where its at! I often prefer straight sashimi as rice is just a filler-upper! :)
And other things, I don't know where everyone lives but how easy it for everyone to get good sushi where they live? I have travelled around somewhat and haven't found as good sushi as I find in my hometown of Vancouver (BC, Canada). We have amazing sushi here....decently priced....and our city is chock full of sushi and japanese restaurants.
