Or maybe I'm just one of those people that has to try everything at least once, so I don't feel like I'm missing out. Either way, for now, I know where I belong, and that means I can sleep soundly tonight...at least for one night anyway.

*Written last Friday during lunch hour, with a double-double burger in one hand, and a pen in the other.

I’ve recently ventured out of the
Stay-at-home-Mom hive to try full-time working motherhood on for size.

Obviously, there are adjustments
considering I've been home with my daughter over two years. For one, trying to find “work” clothes in a closet that’s
seen it’s share of turn-over (pre-kid-stylish to maternity to
machine-wash-only) is a bit challenging. Not being able to check my personal email whenever I want is definitely another. Though, the biggest adjustment is being away from my daughter for
nine-hour periods.

I’ve discovered that I miss the
details and minutiae of the day. I used
to know what she ate and when, what books she wanted to read, or if Abby
Cadabby made an appearance on “The Street” that day. I knew whether my daughter spontaneously sang songs, tried out new phrases, or requested Ring Around the
Rosie until she got so dizzy she couldn’t stand.

And now I don’t have that mental
logbook. Instead I have a head full of
personally meaningless details about trade shows or database functions.

Yesterday I returned home to find
my daughter still taking her afternoon nap.
Her hair was braided (thanks to my mom and her creative hair techniques)
and tied with a ribbon, and next to her head on the night table was a moth in a
glass jar. On closer inspection I
noticed she had a milk mustache. She also had
the serene look of a child who had played hard.

It was all evidence of what I had
missed. And that was the hardest part of the week.

The subtitle is Baby,
Beauty, Balance, and Bliss….all very important B words. It’s meant to be a book of advice and
reflections on the wide mental and physical world of motherhood. And as you probably know, I love my mommy books.

The author, Anna Johnson, defines Yummy as “joyous, naughty,
delicious, creative, intrepid, and sensually alive”, and concedes that
mothering in this fashion is not taking the easy or popular road. She covers everything from style to nutrition to running a house and how to stay sane.

The heart of the book is valuable and holds an inspired
message. Despite sometimes feeling like
just a “cradle and service station”, or guilty about any combination of things,
she reminds mothers to follow our instincts.

That said, parts of the book resemble a narcissistic
monologue on bohemian mothering, which may be world’s apart from your own experience. I found myself taking
little gems and skipping over other chapters completely (particularly some of
the pregnancy-related ones).

For example, she completely lost me when she devoted pages
on pages about “utterly scrumptious names” (Nothing could make me name my son
Adonis or daughter Gogo), but then reeled me back in with this sentence:

“Until I finally joined the ranks, I hated every homily I
heard about the lifestyle, commitment, and knotty conundrums of motherhood.”

Followed with:

“Erma Bombeck
carried on about domestic angst and housewife hell with a dry, endless cackle,

Another favorite: “It’s a passion and it’s a job, and just
because it needs to be done, it shouldn’t obliterate the identity and
importance of the woman doing it.”

Reading The Yummy Mummy Manifesto is a bit like listening to
an older sister you both admire and question. Some of what she says will be dead on helpful and
affirming, and other parts are just going to cause you to roll your eyes. I believe that’s because Johnson writes in a candid tone, and her book isn't meant to be an instruction manual. It's written more like a blog - something to be savored bit by bit, but not used as a rigorous reference.

Funny you should ask.

In life, we all experience loss, and fairly often. We lose our keys. We lose our place in the line at the grocery store when we
remember that we forgot the milk. We
lose a phone number jotted on a scrap of paper. Sometimes we even lose our minds (usually temporarily, but
sometimes indefinitely).

But, it’s the profound losses – the death of a loved one,
the loss of a job or relationship or home, that sideline us from daily life,
but ultimately can wrench us out of a rut and force us to really examine our
lives with new eyes. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."

I’ve recently experienced profound loss and found the most
comfort from those who have also experienced deep loss, or those that simply
reached out to say they’re thinking about me.
I’ve also learned not to take it personally if someone doesn’t
acknowledge my loss at all. It can be
overwhelming trying to find the right words sometimes.

I read an insightful statement on loss and grieving recently, “…you will
see that you never really had, in the way that you thought, that person or item
you were mourning. And you will see
that you will always have them in other ways.” The first time I read that, I cried. The second time I read it, which was aloud to my husband, I cried again. Today, when I read it, I felt at peace in it's truth.

So, I suppose I'm not going to answer this question directly because I don't even feel it's important who/what I actually lost. I think we've all lost things/people/places/moments/feelings that we wish we still had. What's most important is how we proceed after our loss, and that is the journey.
